As we all are adjusting to our new "normal" I wanted to share with you some online resources for reading.  Bookshare and Libby require that you enter a library card number to get started.  The other sites are offering their products for free while students are out-of-school due to COVID-19.  I hope that you will find something great to read:)

Summer Reading!

Summer is off to a wonderful start at my house and my family and I are staying busy with summer school, work, and visiting with friends.  Summer is also a great time to catch up on reading for fun so I wanted to share (and re-share) some resources that might help you find a favorite new book!  Even though you may not want to join a "reading challenge" I find that the booklists are a great way to discover a new author or title.  In my summer school class, we are creating a reading journal that students can use to organize book titles that they have read and their thoughts about the stories. 

I would also like to draw your attention to my Draggo page that contains lots of different links to websites on a variety of subjects.  I spent some time connecting to the links and found that using the Firefox or Safari browser worked best for me as several of the games require Adobe Flash to work.  There is also a section on my Draggo page that has links to Audiobooks.  These are great to use when reading more difficult material as you can follow along with the reader.

Dyslexia Awareness Month

Wow, it has been too long since I last posted!  Time is flying by and I can't believe that it is almost the end of October.  October is a special month in that it is Dyslexia Awareness Month.  In honor of that, the Erika Center at Bodine School (where I work) is sponsoring several movie screenings of the show, The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia.  Please see the information below about this important event.  To register to attend please contact me at glandaiche@bodineschool.org.

Summertime post from the past...

Summertime family reading

"Summertime, and the livin' is easy" are lyrics from the famous play Porgy and Bess and I hope that this is the feeling you have around your house right now.  Although you are all probably busy still doing "regular" daily things, you at least don't have lots of "homework" added to the schedule.  This is a perfect time to read together as a family and there are several "techniques" that parents can use when reading with their child to improve reading fluency.

Fluency is developed by listening to good readers and by practicing fluent reading.  You and your child can "chorus" read passages together (reading the same thing at the same time) or "echo" read where one person reads a sentence or phrase first and the another person reads it immediately after, like an echo.  As you read together, stop and point out connections to real-life experiences, movies or tv shows, or other previously read books.  Making connections is a good way to build your child's understanding of, and, interest in, a story.  Also, make sure to stop and discuss unfamiliar words and practice sounding them out together.  It is fun to "share" things that you have read with an "audience" (like other family members) as your child improves their reading ability and confidence.

Happy Summer everyone!  As we approach the official beginning of summer with summer solstice (the shortest day of the year!), it is important to remember to keep your reading and math skills sharp.  You will find some activities to help you do this on my Draggo page - click here.  I have been testing some of the links and have found that several send an error message regarding Adobe Flash and must be used with the Firefox browser.  I plan to add more links soon and I hope that you have fun exploring and learning on them:)

Election Fever 2016!!

It has been months since I have posted, but I wanted to let you know that I have added several links to my Draggo page with activities pertaining to the upcoming election.  On one site you can "Cast your vote" for President and on another you can pretend that you are running for President.  I promise to add more soon!

I am writing this post while I sit on the balcony of my high school friend Melanie's beach condo and boy do I have a great view!!  Being at the beach making summertime memories is one of my favorite things to do:)

Hello!  Sorry that it has been so long since I have posted, but I have been "sharing" a computer with my daughter and she has had lots of schoolwork to complete:)  We are getting a new computer soon and we are all so excited.
