I had the opportunity to "attend" a virtual conference last week while I was at home for a sick day. I listened to a live webinar from the Global Education Conference. The session that I heard was about "Six School-Wide Strategies to Globalize Your School." Dr. Brandon Wiley is the Executive Director of the Asia Society's International Studies Schools Network (ISSN) and he discussed how schools in the US are working to develop students' global competence by using project-based learning and portfolios. He stressed how important it is today to have our students be college and career-ready when they leave high school. This preparation goes beyond just teaching the "basics" and involves real-world problem-solving, inquiry, and collaboration.
I am very interested in the topic of global education and have been privileged to serve as a judge with another global collaborative movement, the Flat Classroom Project, which has now become Flat Connections (click to go to their website).

Announcement: Internet Safety Talk Postponed
Announcement from Mrs. Stephens:
Due to unforseen circumstances, Assistant United States Attorney, Deb Ireland, will be unable to join us for our Thursday morning coffee (tomorrow 11/14) to discuss internet safety and how to protect our children from online predators. We will let you know as soon as we can reschedule Ms. Ireland because I know many of you were looking forward to hearing from her. Her presentation two years ago was both informative and eye opening.
Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support of our Lower School program. Our families make this community so special!

Important Parent Event
The Lower School will host Assistant U.S. Attorney Debra Ireland, a member of the Project Safe Childhood unit, on Thursday, November 14th from 7:30 - 8:30 in the LS Library. She will speak with parents of students in grades 1-4 about online safety for our children in an ever-changing technological world. She will also lead our third and fourth grade students in a healthy discussion about the Internet, cyberbullying, and methods to keep them safe online. We hope you can join us for this wonderful opportunity.
